Want to hear more about life in the amazingly old (est. 1651) city of Kajaani? During a guided walking tour (1h) You will hear about the history of the town through centuries and see landmarks of the economic and cultural development.

Price: 10 €/ person, minimum number of 6 participants.
Starting point: at the Market Square, at the statue of Count Per Brahe.

Kajaani Art Museum Exhibition

The Kajaani Art Museum features a high-quality setting of nationally and internationally interesting modern art.

Three German artists working with different techniques create pieces in dialogue with space.

Permanent exhibition of Kainuu Museum

Kainuu Museum’s permanent exhibition offers an exciting overview of the region’s history and the lives of its people over a period of 10,000 years. The exhibition begins with the region’s fascinating prehistory and related discoveries. The exhibition also introduces visitors to the history of the city of Kajaani, as it grew from a small town of wooden buildings to the region’s centre.

The Renfors Route, 3-10 km

Experience the natural and cultural sights of Kajaani along the trails besides the river Kajaanijoki. Along the route you can find information boards featuring interesting sights and historical figures such as: Eino Leino, Elias Lönnrot, Pietari Brahe, the Kajaani Castle ruins and the Tar Canal.

Kajaani Church

The Kajaani Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1897 and designed by Jacob Ahrenberg. The beautiful wooden church which the roof trusses were influenced by the ones in the Westminster Hall in London.

Tar Canal in River Kajaanijoki

The large rapids of River Kajaaninjoki, Koivukoski and Ämmäkoski, were the biggest obstacles for the oarsmen rowing tar barrels to Oulu in 1800 century. The canal building project begun in 1836 and the canals were finally completed 11 years later. The only tar channel in use in the world, built in the 1840s, was decommissioned in 1915 and reopened in 1984.

Kajaani castle ruins

In the centre of Kajaani you will find the northernmost stone castle in the world. It was built in the beginning of the 17th century and was destroyed in the Great Northern War in 1716.

Kaukavesi Aquatics Centre offers a whole host of refreshing recreation while your Kajaani visit. Relax in a warm-water pool, experience the exhilaration of whooshing down a water slide or increase your fitness in the competition pool – you can do it all! Under the same roof there is also a modern gym. Kaukavesi is located right next to the centre of Kajaani by River Kajaaninjoki ja Kaukametsä Conferens Centre.

Welcome to visit Ärjä Island a common place for all of us Finns! With our boat transport you can get smoothly from the port of Ruunaniemi to the main pier of Ärjä Island. This trip has a time of 3 hours for hiking and socializing on the island. The return ride from Ärjä leaves at about 12.30.

The Great Escape Kajaani – Can You escape?

Mountain Bike Rental

The Kajaani city has five TREK Roscoe 7 and Marlin mountain bikes (sizes XS – XL) available for loan. The bike rental point is located in the Kaukavesi water sports center.
Availability: Mon and Wed 6am–7.30pm, Tue and Thu–Fri 8am–7.30pm, Sat and Sun 10am-6pm.
Price: free of charge (except for the fee for losing the bike). Rental includes helmet.

Padel playground and equipment rental

You have possibility to play Padel near the center of Kajaani, in a scenic location by the city pond. Padel is played on a 10-meter x 20-meter field surrounded by glass and wire mesh walls.
Price: Mon-Fri 6am-4pm, 32 €/shift and other time period 36€/shift.
Racket rent (incl. balls) is 4 €/racket/shift.
The racket rent includes balls that can be found in the rental racket box where you will receive a code in a separate message after the booking confirmation.

Gym equipment and a gymnastics stand for weight training can be found from city ​​pond multipurpose field. On summer days, there are free weights and a squat cage in the sea container.
